The 1923 Indianapolis 500: A race with first-ever Bugatti’s and supercharged Mercedes.
   Tommy Milton, starting from pole, eventually became the winner aafter being replaced by Howdy Wilcox for about 50 laps. Milton had his hands taken care of, as these had gotten bruised. With that victory, Tommy Milton was the first two-time winner of Indianapolis (in 1921 and now in 1923).
   It was the first time that Bugatti participated, although they disappointed. They placed three cars on second row of the grid, but only one finished the race. Mercedes introduced the first supercharged car, but it also showed problems. But it was the introduction of supercharging at Indianapolis.
In the first half of the 1920’s, the Europe racing scene and Indianapolis began to lose each others interest.
