INTERNATIONAL SWEEPSTAKES.
Foreign Cars for Third Annual 500-Mile Race on Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The third annual 500-mile race on the Indianapolis motor speedway, Memorial Day, will be international in fact as well as in name. This event has been termed the international sweepstakes, and while in former years cars of foreign make have competed there has been no effort on the part of the European manufacturers to be represented. This year at least three countries, Great Britain, France and Italy, will have machines direct from the factory in the contest.
Herewith are presented reproductions from photographs of three of the best-known foreign racing drivers who will take part. Albert Guyot will drive a Sunbeam, made in England, while Jules Goux and Paul Zuccarelli will pilot Peugeot cars, made in France. It also is understood that the Isotta Fraschini factory in Italy intends to send three machines to this country for the race.
Guyot belongs to the old school of French drivers. In 1908 he won in the light car class for the French Grand Prix, and has taken hundreds of medals and trophies by his cool headed, scientific driving. Goux is best known as the winner of the Sarthe Grand Prix last year, although he has been victorious with Peugeot cars in a large number of important events. His machine in this event will be a duplicate of the model driven to win last year’s Grand Prix. Zuccarelli is an Italian, but he has been driving French cars for years. He also is a long time winner and a fitting teammate for Goux.
