The Pre-war era covers the years 1894 – 1915.
Different engine types are described, such as single- and multi-cylinder engines, T-head and L-head engines. The first Benz engine that also powered many French cars around 1900. The first hemi-head engines of the American Welch and the Belgian Pipe cars. Then the Charlatans-developed 4-cylinder 4-valve double-ohc engine that powered the Peugeot cars from 1912 onward.
The first sans-cheveaux’s of the city-to-city races. The racers that were run in the Gordon Bennett and Vanderbilt races. the Grand Prix racers from 1906 on, in which the Renault, the Peugeot and the Mercedes cars appeared.
