La Course Paris-Bordeaux of 1895 in fact was the real first autorace in history. Again organised by Le Petit Journal, it covered in all some 1200 km; a quite greater distance then the year before. Emille Levassor in a Panhard was the first one to arrive back in Paris in 48 hours and 48 minutes. He wasn’t granted first place however, as his car was not regulations-conform. But history defined him as the winner and Paris donated a special statue for that victory on the Place de la Porte Maillot. In result, all steam cars all broke down on the first day. Above that, the fair handling of the cars with combustion engines (almost all engines were Daimlers) became all the more clear. Another important technical feat was the participation of the first vehicle with air-filled rubber tyres from Michelin.
